The N/T “Pietro Mondello”, the new ship of the Caronte & Tourist Group, has entered navigation on the Strait of Messina.
It is the third ship of the C&T Group powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) to operate in the Mediterranean.
Yet another fruit of the experience gained by the Group and the background of the design company is the Pietro Mondello that was designed to support its twin Elio to best serve the connection between the two shores of the Strait of Messina.

Propulsion
The propulsion is ensured by two azimuth thrusters (one at bow, one at stern) rotating and directing the thrust to 360°.
This propulsion system facilitates the maneuvres even in adverse sea-weather conditions.
Additionally, a high standard of safety and reliability is ensured for the propulsion system through the guaranteed redundancy of the retractable thrusters.
Environmental benefits
The company aims to reduce its environmental impact as much as possible. Therefore, we chose hybrid power supply engines with Diesel-Liquefied Natural Gas fuel. The silicone-based hull paints reduce the use of biocides harmful to the marine environment, minimizing the hydrodynamic friction resistance. Thanks to the batteries, the ship can stop in port without using combustion engines, eliminating emissions.

Passenger services
From the garage, passengers can access the main lounge through escalators or lifts.
Particular attention has been paid to welcoming Persons with Reduced Mobility by simplifying access and usability of the service.
