Italy goes by sea.
On 7th October 2001 the "Cartour" left Messina on her maiden voyage heading for Salerno. 5 years later, the line doubled thanks to the addition of the "Cartour Beta". Caronte & Tourist's idea is to ease road freight, bypassing the Salerno – Reggio Calabria motorway and allowing drivers, relaxed after a good night's sleep, and at lower cost, to arrive in central Italy, ready to start their northbound journey. It also proved to be a winning formula for tourists, who, tempted by an eight-hour journey, free from the stress and uncertainties of a journey by road, not to mention the reasonable cost, find on "Caronte Tourist" ships all the comfort of a mini cruise.
